Cinque Terre: New information at sea

The National Park and the Marine Protected Area are currently studying an information campaign for the Summer of 2009 aimed at making yachtsmen more aware when navigating our seas. Signs and buoys will be used to indicate divers and the campaign will also be activated via Internet, Facebook and Youtube

The Cinque Terre National Park is looking to launch a new information campaign in the Summer of 2009 due to the growing interest in the sea and the increasing numbers of yachtsmen navigating our waters. The campaign aims to avoid  accidents at sea and damage to the environment.

For years the Park Authority and Marine Protected Area have been aware of the problems of the sea and have published rules and regulations for navigation and swimming in the local waters on their web site, as well as on other Park and National Marine Reserve sites. Recently photos and information have  also been published on Facebook and videos on Youtube. The campaign next summer will place very visible signs and posters throughout the territory to raise the awareness of all sea users but above all that of the underwater divers, swimmers and snorkellers.

The proposal to launch this new publicity campaign was presented to the Cinque Terre Park by the “5 Terre Academy” association. The recommendations and cautions are very simple to follow, yachtsmen must remember when they are at the helm to pay the upmost attention to signs and navigate at a minimum of 100 metres distance from the buoys ( order of the General Headquarters of the Harbour Office of the 26th June 2003 number 82/033465). The campaign has also been set up in light of the new normative that allows craft with eco-compatible engines into the Marine Protected Area thus increasing the sea traffic and the risk of accidents.
